London, 2 March 2025 — In a resolute display of unity and commitment, European leaders convened in London today for a high-stakes summit focused on bolstering Ukraine's defence capabilities and advancing the pursuit of a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict. The summit culminated in significant pledges, underscoring Europe's steadfast support for Ukraine's sovereignty and security.


UK Announces Landmark £1.6 Billion Defence Package.

At the heart of the summit's outcomes was British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's announcement of a £1.6 billion export finance deal to equip Ukraine with over 5,000 state-of-the-art air defence missiles. This ambitious initiative is intended to fortify Ukraine's air defence infrastructure, safeguarding critical facilities from ongoing aggression. The deal is also set to stimulate job creation within the UK, with the missiles' production based in Belfast.


"Europe faces a once-in-a-generation moment to reinforce our collective security and stand by Ukraine in its hour of need," Prime Minister Starmer declared at the post-summit press conference. "This package not only strengthens Ukraine's defences but also sends an unequivocal message that European solidarity remains unshaken."


Towards a Comprehensive Peace Plan

In a significant diplomatic development, the United Kingdom and France, working closely with Ukraine, revealed plans to draft a comprehensive ceasefire proposal. This initiative will be presented to the United States, emphasising the need to secure American backing to ensure the effectiveness and longevity of any potential peacekeeping efforts. Prime Minister Starmer stressed that U.S. security guarantees would be crucial in maintaining stability and enforcing the terms of any peace agreement.


Calls for Increased Defence Spending Across Europe

Amid mounting concerns over regional security, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen urged European nations to bolster their defence budgets significantly. Proposals were discussed to establish a minimum defence spending target of 3% of GDP, reflecting the gravity of the current geopolitical climate and the need for enhanced military preparedness.

The summit followed a period of heightened diplomatic friction between the United States and Ukraine, following a tense meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
