India Need Help in Managing Current COVID-19 Crisis

I am writing this when I am receiving messages of untimely deaths of 3-6 people each day, whom I know directly or indirectly. Like many others who live abroad, I am deeply terrified for the well being of our family members, friends, and our communities in India.

The most anticipated second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic devastated Indian families. The healthcare system is currently almost collapsed. Until recently, not only India had managed to contain the pandemic with two effective vaccines. India also supplied vaccine to both developing and developed countries.

Today, a piece of positive news came that the United States pledges to India its support. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said "Our hearts go out to the Indian people in the midst of the horrific Covid-19 outbreak. We are working closely with our partners in the Indian government, and we will rapidly deploy additional support to the people of India and India's healthcare heroes".

This is a time when people in India desperately need help as they are going through, their most difficult time in history and need more international expertise and support.

India is the pharmacy of the world, vaccine capital and supplier of global health and medical professionals, then what went wrong to bring her this grave medical and humanitarian crises?

The entire political class has failed Indian citizens because of their misplaced priorities, lack of vision and government’s timely and appropriate actions. The civil administration attitude in hiding data is also contributing to the problem. Any strategy only works when experts draw a strategy based on real data and information.

The images of maskless crowds, protests, watching cricket matches, mega political rallies, big religious gatherings were the perfect recipe for present crises.

When political leaders organised big gatherings of people without social distancing or masks, common citizens become too complacent as they follow their leaders. The current crisis is the result of lapses from all fronts.

Indian people are struggling to stay afloat and get through the worst crisis. India needs to address this crisis as a One Nation with resolve and conviction with a short term and midterm plan drawn and executed by experts.
